eng To motivate or not to motivate? The theme of this workshop is inspired by what some authors call the motivation paradox. Is it the higher-education English teacher’s responsibility to do his/her best to motivate the students to work hard on the development of their communicative competence in the foreign language or not? Apart from being ready to share her own experience of trying to cope with the dilemma, the author will suggest some ideas and present examples of activities that can help students become more interested in improving their spoken interaction and production skills. The presented tasks will include those that have been used in ESP classes with students majoring in Information Technologies, who often tend to prefer interaction with computers and gadgets to face-to-face communication with other humans, including not only teachers and colleagues, but also potential business partners or clients. motivation; ESP; higher education; communicative language competence; skills; communicative methods; information and communication technologies
