eng The World of the Reversed in the Works of Iain Banks This paper attempts to reflect on the questions of self-definition in Scotland. As the latest opinions seem to suggest, the height of the identity debate is over and Scottish authors are either looking for inspiration outside Scotland or are dealing with identities, which were overlooked due to the overall focus on national identity. Therefore, the question of Scottishness is analysed through the traditionally problematic gender, religious identities or even through individual self-definition. The selected author, Iain Banks, offers such representations in his mainstream novels. The article represents a part of a long-term research the author is carrying out.
