It can be very stressful to know exactly what to do when you encounter a medical emergency, even when you are in your home country, speaking your mother tongue and have some first aid knowledge.

Now, imagine the same situation abroad, in a country with different habits, culture and language!

Aware of this challenge and dedicated to helping international students and employees feel more integrated and secure in Pardubice and the Czech Republic, the Dept. of International Affairs and Development and the Faculty of Health Studies have decided to organize First Aid courses.

The first session was held in English on 11th October, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Health Studies.

Caroline Novak-Jolly

Department of International Affairs and Developement

The course, presented by Mr. Pospichal and his student Mr. Petr Absolon, was filled to capacity with 9 participants from India, Ghana, Russia, Sweden, the Philippines and France that were keen on learning how to help injured colleagues, friends, family or strangers in the Czech Republic, where the language could be a barrier.

This basic first aid course was designed for international participants who may come across first aid situations at the University or in their everyday life in the Czech Republic.

It aimed to give participants the skills and knowledge in English and Czech to call the rescue service 112 in Czech and English, and to provide emergency life-saving support for:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Diabetes
  • Epileptic attack, hypoglycaemia etc.

For greater interaction, theory was mixed with practical sessions (such as calling an ambulance, simulation of incident/diagnosis etc.)

Based on the success of the October 2018 session, the Dept. of International Affairs and Development would like to continue its fruitful cooperation with the Faculty of Health Studies and offer new sessions for people who couldn´t attend the first one.

This course is ideal for anyone who wants to learn basic first aid or needs to refresh their first aid qualification, so if you are interested and want to sign up for the next session, please contact Caroline Novák-Jolly at caroline.novak-jolly@upce.cz.
