ROCARE

Roman Cement for Architectural Restoration to New High Standards

In 2009, the Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice together with fourteen other participants from across Europe set out to participate in the international research project ROCARE, the successor of ROCEM.

The international project ROCARE is funded within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, number FP7-ENV-2008-1, 226898.

After ROCEM, a pioneer project to reintroduce the Roman cement technology, ROCARE aims to further cultivate and commercialize the method. 

The combination of a time-tested binder, modern technology of its manufacturing as well as of its application represents the cornerstone of the project, which promotes the introduction of Roman cement among commonly used building materials suitable for historic monument preservation. The target group is especially buildings dating to the turn of the 20th century, whose richly decorated façades with sculptured surface can be attributed to this material. The maintenance, preservation and restoration of these façades are important issues in preserving Europe’s architectural heritage. 

The project involves:

- increasing the competitive potential of Roman cement by optimising the technology of its manufacturing in all its stages

- carrying out laboratory tests and studies, which aim to a better understanding of cement properties as well as to the identification of optimal mortar preparation and handling in the conservation practice itself

- ensuring wide-scale dissemination of the technology leading to the increase in its market potential.

STONECORE

Stone Conservation for the Refurbishment of Buildings

Since 2009, the Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice together with eleven other participants from seven European countries have participated in the international research project STONECORE.

The international research project STONECORE is funded within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, number NMP-SE-2008-213651.

The project goal is the development and application of nano-materials in the conservation of natural and artificial stone and plaster; more specifically, of materials compatible with historic materials used in architecture and surface treatments of buildings and sculptures in the past.

The project is further focused on the refinement of non-destructive analytical methods used in stone diagnosis.

The main aims of the project are the following:

  1. The development of synthesis methods of nano-materials compatible with natural and artificial stone.
  2. The development and assessment of technologies suitable for the application of nano-materials in stone and plaster consolidation and removal of microbiological infestation.
  3. The development of new methods of non-destructive stone assessment based on ultrasound and geophysical surveys.
  4. The application of the developed materials on a wide range of stone and cement objects and the analysis of the results.

The project proceeds from the laboratory research and application on small-scale testing surfaces to the application on selected historic objects.

The Faculty of Restoration carries out laboratory as well as applied research of nano-materials used on various types of lime-based materials (stone, plaster). Selected types of nano-materials are subsequently applied to specific historic objects – historic plaster on the east part of the Red Tower façade in the city of Litomyšl, parts of the façade of Pernštejn Castle and selected architectural elements of the façade of Saint Barbara Church in Kutná Hora.

The results of the project should be known in 2011, when the STONECORE project is to finish.

NANOFORART: The Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice together with Gema Art Group are testing new nano-materials designed to preserve cultural heritage

The Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice and Gema Art Group belong among the main participants in the applied research project NANOFORART. NANOFORART is a three-year international project funded by the European Union with the overall budget of 2,900,000 EUR. The amount of 256,000 EUR allocated to Czech participants will be used for their participation in the development and testing of nano-materials including the verification of the application possibilities of the materials on authentic historic objects. Thanks to international and interdisciplinary cooperation, the project will contribute to the introduction of new conservation technologies into heritage care and extension of the cultural heritage preservation possibilities.

The main goal of the project is to develop and commercialize functional materials based on modern nano-technologies, which can find potential users among both cultural institutes and individual restorers across the world. Under the supervision of the Center for Colloid and Surface Science in Florence, the project has united fifteen institutions from Italy, Denmark, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, France, Slovenia, Mexico and the Czech Republic.

The main goals of the project are the development of dispersions of nanoparticles, micellar solutions, micro-emulsions and gels, thus offering new and environmentally-friendly possibilities of conservation, restoration and historic object preservation. The research part of the project is focused on the development of methods of cleaning and consolidation of stone, historic plasters and wall paintings which use nano-materials and are easy to apply. Special attention is paid to the application of materials in deacidification and conservation of paper and parchment. In both cases, the aim is to prepare materials and technologies where the negative impact on health and environment is reduced to minimum.

 

The other part of the project emphasizes the role of sharing and transfer of technologies among the project participants, thus leading to the standardization of application methods, commercialization of the newly developed materials and technologies and the evaluation of the impact on health and environment. Since its beginning, the project is aimed at introducing nano-materials into conservation and restoration practice and their dissemination among the end-users. It is fundamental that the newly developed methods are used and tested by participating museums, restoration sites and other institutions. At the same time, the institutions will play their role in the dissemination of information and provide training to interested restoration or conservation specialists in the form of workshops, seminars, etc.

UPCEFR – The Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice, the project participant no. 7 (the Czech Republic)

GEMA – GEMA, Gema Art Group, the project participant no. 13 (the Czech Republic)

Established in 2005, the Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice is one of the two university sites which provide tertiary education in the field of restoration. The role of Gema Art Group is conservation and restoration of national heritage objects. The co-operation between the Faculty of Restoration and Gema Art Group represents an ideal link between the research, development and application parts of the project. The faculty can use its experience in the field of systematic interdisciplinary research as well as participation in other projects at national and international levels. The key role of Gema Art Group is to test the newly developed nano-materials and technologies on selected historic monuments within their restoration practice
