The objective of the Surface Engineering doctorate study course is to prepare professionals in a field of science and technology embracing the chemistry and physics of materials, substrate surfaces and coatings/layers applied to them. Students in this course are steered towards problems in surface finishing of various materials by using coatings and thin layers based on macromolecular substances and their composites combined with inorganic pigments and fillers. The final theses, all in surface engineering, combine the chemistry of polymers with inorganic chemistry. Benefiting from their knowledge in macromolecular chemistry, the professionals who have completed this course have the expertise to design syntheses of new binders for organic coatings as well as of related new functional pigments, various additives and catalysts, and based on this, to develop now paint formulas. The students acquire advanced knowledge in the technology of macromolecular substances, chemistry of film-forming substances, as well as the chemistry of inorganic substances with focus on pigments and fillers. The professional is an expert in the preparation and characterisation of organic coatings, thin functional layers, conductive polymers and nanomaterials and their applications, and is skilled in the field of printing materials and fibre surface finishing and dyeing materials.
