Scientific profile

Improvised explosives

The area of my work is characterisation of improvised explosives (or home made explosives produced by amateur chemists or terrorists). In recent years, my scientific attention has focused on some of the most illegally produced and abused substances - organic peroxides (namely triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD)), erytritol tetranitrate (ETN), methylnitrate and others. My research is aimed on synthesis and analysis of these substances (the possibility of misuse of precursors for their production, study the chemical composition of explosives). The results are important for forensic analysts and can also contribute to discovery of who has produced the explosive or who has used it for criminal purposes. Furthermore, the sensitivity characteristics are studied (including the possibility of reducing their sensitivity to mechanical stimuli during handling and disposal) and detonation characteristics (to estimate the consequences of their abuse). The results of my research (that are published in scientific journals) can be utilizable in the fight against misusing of improvised explosives. Institute of energetic materials also collaborates with Ministry of Interior, Czech Republic (e.g. courses “Improvised explosives” for EOD) and NATO (Explosive Ordonace Disposal; Centre of Excellence) in this area.

Primary explosives

The second area of my interest is primary explosives. These initiation substances are used in initiation devices (detonators, primers). Globally, the attention of researchers is focused on development of environmentally friendly replacement of primary explosives based on heavy metal salts (lead azide, lead styphnate). My current work is aimed on metallic salts of high energy triazines that could be candidates for „green” primary explosives.

Collaboration with industry

Industry of Energetic Materials has a long collaboration with company Explosia a. s. We have solved several grant projects of Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and Technology Agency of the Czech Republic. The area of this collaboration is development of new energetic materials for utilizable in technology. Our current research is aimed on precursors for environmentally friendly primary explosives.
