Studio of Restoration and Conservation of Wall Painting and Sgraffito
Due to the substantially different technology and methodology needed for the conservation and restoration of wall paintings, the specialization focuses on the specific procedures used during the conservation and restoration of wall paintings based on multi-disciplinary knowledge.
The curriculum begins with the history of traditional building materials, techniques and crafts and continues with techniques of restoration and conservation of wall painting and sgraffito. Students learn basic artistic techniques -drawing, drawing of a figure, basic techniques of painting and basic historical artistic methods - egg tempera, fresco, secco and sgraffito.
Students are taught the proper methodology for conducting research and documentation, the selection of conservation methods, and the actual execution of the restoration of murals as part of the historical architecture. Students also learn the knowledge and skills required for sgraffito restoration and conservation, which represents an important part of the Czech Republic preservation fund. The field of sgraffito restoration is taught within the context of wall painting in general, as from a technological point of view, the restoration and conservation of plaster layer sequences also involves pigmentation and finishing. Appropriate attention is also given to the restoration and conservation of historical plaster layers without a paint-like surface.
Students are trained in the following fields:
- artistic aspects of wall painting,
- conservation methods,
- materials used in artistic work (aiming at materials used in a certain field) - its properties, resources, application,
- natural sciences - with a stress on understanding of causes of degradation of materials used for creation of a work of art and its following prevention against harmful influence of the environment,
- training in the basic artistic, arts-and-craft techniques,
- history of art and auxiliary historical sciences.
