Institute

The Insitute called the Centre for Material Science (in abbreviation “CMS”) was established within the University of Pardubice organizational structure on February 1, 2009.

It is the only institute in the University of Pardubice Status, beside 7 main University bodies/faculties, established according to the Higher Education Act No. 111/1998 Sb. (§ 34), with a particuliar focus on scientific activities, research and development in material science.

The Academic Senate of the University of Pardubice confirmed its existence on January 20, 2009.

The aim of the Centre, together with further important collaborative institutions from the area of material science in the Czech Republic, is to create an advanced research infrastructure - centre of excellence in fundamental and applied research in the area of chemistry and technology of new materials and their characterization, i.e., renewable energy, high-tech materials for photonics, electronics, opto-electronics, data storage and catalysis, strengthening a 60 year long tradition of successful research activities at the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the University of Pardubice, and study of solid state chemistry and physics of inorganic materials of

  • the Centre of Perspective Inorganic Materials, project No LC 523, realized at Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry, since 2000,
  • and the Joint Laboratory of Solid State Chemistry of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry AS CR v.v.i. and University of Pardubice with residency in Pardubice, since 1980.

The systematic fundamental research of new and prospective inorganic, organic and hybrid organo-inorganic compounds and materials has evolved with specific focus in the following fields:

  • solid state chemistry and physics, nanoscale and surfaces,
  • modelling and synthesis of materials,
  • materials for renewable energy sources and storage,
  • materials for optics, optoelectronics, electronics,
  • materials for heterogeneous catalysis.

It is supported by broad domestic and international cooperation, and based on:

  • established industrial background,
  • concentration of innovative and personnel potential,
  • international team of creative and highly motivated young scientists,
  • 250 publications in impacted journals per year (2008),
  • strategic position and excellent accessibility.

The research is tightly connected to high-tech applications improving the quality of life and prosperity.

The project of the Centre for Material Science is being prepared to be funded by public grants drawn from both national and European funds (ERDF) within the Research and Development for Innovations (RDI) Operational Programme.

The Rector of the University of Pardubice Prof. Jiří Málek appointed Prof. Tomáš Wágner the director of the Centre of Material Science, as of the date of February 1, 2009.
